Are Field Sobriety Tests Accurate?
Popular field sobriety test include the horizontal gaze, finger to nose touching, and the one-leg stand. Rather than testing blood alcohol content (BAC), they test an individual's balance and ability to follow directions.
Field sobriety tests can be difficult even for a completely sober person. Combined with the stress and anxiety of a DUI traffic stop, any individual can have difficulty passing these tests — regardless of alcohol consumption.
